Various learning centers or environments are created throughout the room with manipulatives, science materials, art experiences, etc. Walk into an Educare classroom and you will see children painting at an easel or building a tower with building blocks. You will see the teacher with a small group of children engaged in a science experiment or making coloring pages. Children will be moving around the room, occasionally coming together as a larger group for story or Bible time, but more frequently, working either alone or in small groups at a learning center. The centers are designed so that the children can work independently, without the teacher’s assistance.
Each preschool classroom models developmentally appropriate practices. We recognize that the children in a single classroom have varying needs and abilities cognitively, emotionally, socially, and physically. We provide a wide variety of “hands on” opportunities that will enable the child to discover for themselves the different concepts and skills.
Using a variety of themes throughout the school year, children are involved with their world. By using “hands on” materials, six content areas are covered:
- Literacy - vocabulary and language, phonological awareness, letters, words, print, comprehension, and books.
- Mathematics - numbers, patterns and relationships, geometry and spatial awareness, measurement, data collection, organization, and representation.
- Science - the physical properties of objects, living things, the earth, and the environment.
- Social Studies - how people live, work, get along with others, shape, and are shaped by their surroundings.
- The Arts - dance, music, dramatic play, drawing, and painting.
- Process Skills - observing and exploring; problem solving; and connecting, organizing, communicating, and representing information.
